Dev Blog #1: The start of something great

Hey! Welcome to the first WYLDFIRE developer blog. As we dive in, this blog will offer a view from both the development and testing sides. Eventually, this content will be included in a podcast format alongside the newsletter. Exciting changes are coming!

Overall, the work done this past week was incredibly challenging. The team migrated our services from Windows to Linux. They wanted to maintain optimal performance, so they’re running the service through command prompts. Doing this has significantly improved both game and website performance. This change also allowed us to create six development servers to streamline testing. It took a little more time than we anticipated, but it’s a change that will help speed up the entire process. Next week will be a bit slower due to some scheduling conflicts, but the major missing functions that prompted this maintenance are now beginning—kind of all at the same time. Mechanics, gangs, drugs, and crafting have had the initial groundwork laid out, with a fully custom UI being designed for crafting. Drugs, crafting, and gangs rely on each other so heavily that they kind of have to be developed simultaneously. Overall, it was a week of setup and gathering our thoughts, but after laying the groundwork, the team is excited to get started.

In terms of testing, a lot of time has been spent going through existing bugs, providing much more detailed reports, and confirming the bugs actually exist. This has presented its own set of challenges, especially since we increased the size of the testing team to what it is now. We are going to rely heavily on these team members to ensure everything is done in a timely manner and that our reporting is top-notch. A key feature that was tested was the new gun-running system, which will be a fun criminal activity involving some airplane action, released for our re-release!

Overall, I want to thank you, the community, for understanding why this decision was made and for sticking with us. This dev blog will be a bi-weekly feature and is part of our efforts to be as transparent with you all as possible. Please stay tuned for planned streams, video content, and Discord streams!

Talk to you guys later!
